Barbara Fivush

Dr. Barbara Fivush is a nationally acclaimed pediatric nephrologist who has dedicated much of her career to increasing gender equity in academic medicine. She retired in 2021 after a 41-year career at Johns Hopkins, most recently as Senior Associate Dean of Women in Science and Medicine, inaugural Director of the Office of Women in Science and Medicine, and director of pediatric nephrology. She received her medical degree at Boston University in 1978 and then completed her pediatrics residency and joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 1984.

During her illustrious career, she helped establish the national standards for care of pediatric dialysis patients, developed multiple mentoring programs and created expansive networking opportunities for women in science and medicine. In 2016, Dr. Fivush received the Henry L. Barnett Award for lifetime achievement in pediatric nephrology from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
